Frisbee

Hello from Japan! It is a bit cold out side today. If I run around enough I should get some feeling back in my toes!Yachiyo- machi Board of Education really wants me to come up with fun, inovative classes that teach Japanese children about American culture. Therefore, I have introduced the frisbee to them. They know what a frisbee is, but they don't use them on a regular basis. I invented a game that is halfway between Ultimate Frisbee and Soccer. It is pretty Freaking Fun.. if I can toot my own horn.... and we all know that I do.First step... teaching them to throw a frisbee correctly. I almost peed my pants when most of the guys were trying to throw it like a base ball. The girls tended to do a bit better (as long as they were not afraid to get hit in the face)Here is some of my eager students getting ready for the toss off. Fun, Fun, Fun!!! Their hats are reversable, therefore , it is really easy to distinguish teams. RED and WHITO (I am still trying to break them of this habit that seems to be instilled in them at birth). And we're off! The first half is a bit ridiculous. Frisbees are being thrown all over the place. Most of the kids forget that they are allowed to take five steps before they must throw again. Kids kept forgeting which side of the field to score on. But during halftime some strategising goes on and both teams start to score a lot more goals and I no longer have to fear getting hit on the head with a wild disk. The sun came out and I no longer feared that my whistle would stick to my mouth. Everyone was having a great time. The bright ones in the class figured out how to bend the rules and at the end of each game there was always one team who completly demolished the other. The teachers had a good time watching and laughing at their students. I tried to be a fair ref, but hey... there was only one of me and 40 of them... so sometimes we had to rely on Paper-Rock-Scissors to clear up any problems. The day went without to many glitches. I was pleased with the activity and so was the school. Good Times in Yachiyo are here to stay!
